Porcelain Veneers FAQ

At Birch Lake Dental, we believe everyone should love their smile. We want our patients to have healthy teeth that look great. However, some patients have dental problems that stand in the way of them fully embracing their teeth and smiles. Veneers can be a great option for people who want to enhance the aesthetics of their smiles; here are a few frequently asked questions when it comes to porcelain veneers: Porcelain Veneers FAQ

What are dental veneers?

Porcelain dental veneers are thin coverings that are custom-made for your teeth; they are placed over the visible front part of the tooth and appear like natural teeth. They are thin and durable, made of tooth-colored materials, and bonded to the surface of a tooth to enhance the aesthetics of the tooth/teeth. Porcelain veneers are typically created in a lab and are very resistant to staining compared to other materials.

Why would I need veneers?

Your teeth should be an asset to your confidence and self-esteem. Unfortunately, for many people who have dental problems, however common, teeth can be a source of embarrassment. We believe that you should be able to embrace your smile with confidence, and veneers can be a huge benefit for just that. Many people choose to have veneers for aesthetic purposes. Dental veneers are a viable solution for people concerned about discolored teeth, worn-down teeth, chipped teeth, misaligned teeth, uneven or unevenly spaced teeth, and irregularly shaped front teeth.

How long do dental veneers last?

Veneers often last many years, sometimes more than 20, however, every circumstance is different. It’s important to care for your veneers properly by regularly brushing and flossing your teeth, and visiting your local dentist. If they are properly cared for, veneers can last decades.

What is involved in getting veneers?

Porcelain veneers involve several steps. First, you will consult a prosthodontist to discuss your thoughts and goals, and to determine if veneers are a good option for you. You will learn how veneers can benefit your specific situation and determine any potential considerations you’ll need to make for your dental needs. You may need x-rays or impressions of your teeth. If it’s determined that veneers are a good option for you, tooth preparations will be needed. A little bit of the tooth structure will be removed and then an impression will be done to fit and place the temporary veneers. The temporary veneers will be removed and your final veneers will be placed by bonding them to your teeth. Talk to your dentist about what this process may look like for your unique situation.
